It’s raining today. I actually quite like the rain, it gives me an excuse to do my favourite thing: read. However, I don’t seem to get much time for that these days, no matter what the weather.
In reading I have come across one phrase which just riles me up. It is this: ‘Excuse the pun!’, or its cousin: ‘No pun intended!’ I hate the phrase. What is its purpose? To draw attention to the aforesaid pun which is then to be excused? In my thinking it is a totally irrelevant and novice phrase to use. For one, if there is a pun used with intent what is the necessity of excusing it. In the second place if a pun has accidentally cropped up why draw unnecessary attention to it. The pun may not be excused.
